Voice of the FallenFar away, a voice is calling-
Of someone who, long ago, had fallen.
Listen close and hear it say,
"Hear me this Memorial Day..."
"Under the colors of a flag so true,
I fought a war and died for you.
Listen to me when I say,
'Hear me this Memorial Day...'
You knew not me, and I knew not you,
But the war I fought was just and true.
I knew just what I had to do:
The duty of a chosen few...
Oh, listen mother, hear me dad!
Don't be angry and don't be sad.
War is dark and war is notorious,
But the goal I strived for was very glorious...
Listen to me, and hear me say,
'I died for freedom on that day.'
I did not die in vanity.
I died for all of humanity...
And as I rested there, dead and dying,
I thought I heard some voices crying.
I thought I heard my friends so dear,
And their frantic voices were oh so clear...
I knew surely my fate was sealed,
When I felt the killing steel.
I watched the battle from the ground;
I only saw, and heard no sound...
Oh! How things are clear, in perfect sense!
Just Another SoldierI peered over a hill of rock,
And there I stood, in a state of shock-
Bloody bodies scattered around the battlefield!
From all this hatred, my mind would never be healed.
My helmet was snug...latched on tight,
and I held onto my gun with all my might.
I felt a wave of sweat so damp,
I longed for a nice shower, back at the camp.
There were gunshots in the distance,
And shouts...captured by resistance.
But I was there, all alone,
dreaming of returning to my family back at home.
I wasn't meant to be a soldier, for I was a coward.
I wasn't physically or mentally empowered.
I felt faint at the sight of anguish and blood...
Bodies stepped upon, right into the mud.
I trembled and suddenly felt a chill down my spine.
I felt queasy and saw a blurry vision of my girls...one six, the other nine.
I reached to touch their faces,
But they vanished, not leaving any traces.
So there I stood, hand still extended,
Hoping that my loneliness would soon be mended-
And soon the war would come to an end,
